The Last Post

“I don’t know what we’d have been like without each other but I think the world would be a poorer place. I loved you deeply, I loved you, I loved you, I loved you.”
Ten years ago, Derek Miller, was a healthy, happy father of two young daughters. Nothing could prepare him for the shock when he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
From then on he started to share his experiences in his blog, the good days and not so good days. Remembered as a very private person by his family, blogging became his way of communicating when he at times lost his voice from the therapy he received.
On the 41-year old Canadian’s blog, penmachine.com you get a glimpse into the daily struggles of a cancer patient.
When Miller finally succumbed to the cancer on 11 May of this year, his last blog was posted – as a goodbye message to his loved ones.
His penmachine.com blog crashed for hours, when the entry went viral as grief-stricken fans and thousands more logged onto the site to read his last post.
In one of his last posts he writes: “The world, indeed the whole universe is a beautiful, astonishing, wonderful place.”
The day before his death #welovederek trended on social networking site, twitter as readers paid tribute to Miller, in a gesture by his wife.
Miller’s father, Karl Miller said: “He was proud of his blog and now it is his legacy. It connects him to the world and to his family forever.” JV
