Speed dating the new age way of finding a mate

In today’s fast paced world of emails, internet and social networking speed dating has become the most popular way to meet new people.

It has become such a phenomenon that national radio station 5fm hosted a ‘Love Sucks’ party on Valentine’s Day and broke the Guiness world record for the most people speed dating in one time.

With 432 people at participating in Cape Town and 448 people taking part at the Johannesburg party, with equal quantities of male and female speed daters.

Speed dating is an environment where people sit in front of one another for a prearranged time period – normally five minutes – and engage in quick date like conversations. After the elapsed time you move on to the next person and so on.

In one night you could have up to 15 dates.  After the event organisers match up individuals who indicated a mutual interest in each other, thus opening the way to a possible date.
One of the ladies who took part in the record breaking speed dating event, Simone Jacobs, 25, says: “It’s my first time speed dating. I have heard about it before but wasn’t sure what exactly it entailed. So when my best friend suggested we try it out I said, why not? “

It was awkward at first, says Jacobs, but as the evening progresses you get more comfortable.
“My best friend and I are both professional career women. She just broke up with her boyfriend of six years and wanted to try something new and different.  I work long hours as a lawyer and don’t really have time to go out and meet new people.”

Jacobs says, “This is really a quick and easy way to date, there are ‘no strings attached’ and no guilt feelings if things don’t work out”.

Research released by British investigators earlier this month, however revealed that if people are given too many options they become confused and end up not choosing anyone.

Amber Soletti, owner of a speed dating company, says: “grouping singles by interest or physical preferences boosted chances of a successful connection.

“People know what they like.” JV
